Why we're analysing this film - its from a teenagers prospective.
What sort of feeling and impact can music videos have and what effect could a music video style sequence achieve in a film?
Music videos can create all sorts of emotions depending on the lyrics of the song, these emotions can be shown through the people in the music video. It shows a certain characters feelings in responce to the song. This is the same with music in a film. It reflects emotions and sometimes a characters personality. For example loud, fast, up-beat and exciting lyriced music could be added to a person who loves to party, this type of music can be added to a party scene, a catwalk etc. Slow, peaceful, low harmony, with meaningful lyrics could be added to a scene of someone crying, walking down a quiet road thinking, someone running in slow motion etc..
Can you think of other films which feature extended montage sequences that are quite like music videos?
Princess Diaries 2 where the princess walks with a group of children encouraging them to be more confindent and that they're all princess'. The song played is 'Kelly Clarkson- Breakway'. This song includes the lyrics: I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly, I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky, and I'll make a wish. Take a chance, make a change, and breakaway. This song was used because the lyrics match the scene of achieving something and being stronger as a group of children.
Richard Ayoade's Music Videos:
Arctic Monkeys- Fluorescent Adolescent - this relates to a high speed action adventure sequence. Clowns are used for the twist in the sequence, this could be taken for scary or funny; but as the clowns are destroying and hurting people; this is scary.
