Filming

Saturday 19th November: First day of filming went really well, we did 4 scenes, 3 different locations. This included the drug taking scene, the collapsing scene, invisable scene and 'car crash' scene.
Sunday 20th November: Second day it failed a little bit, Sheida could not make it to my house therefore Aishah and I struggled to film some scenes. We tried to film the hospital scene and the running scene. We found this harder without a 3rd person.

Locations:
In terms of locations, my group and I have decided to work on this as we go along as we may find other locations suitable for our trailer on the way.
However, definate locations includethe hospital scene where a blue bedroom is used instead. The scene is blurry to connote a persons own view of waking up from hospital.

Research; portfolio of supporting materials.

Analysis of the CONVENTIONS of film trailers: how narrative is created, types of edit, use of sound, voice over, dialogue, music, titling, how GENRE is established.
  1. How is narrative created? Equillibrium, Disequillibrium and New Eqillibrium. Hero, Villain, Dispatcher, Helper, Princess, Father, Donor, False Hero. Stories are the events in the order of their occurrence, where as plot is the order in which they are told. Narratives are about the structure of the text
  2. Types of edit?  XCU, CU, MCU, LS, birds eye view, worms eye view, panning, crab, fade in from blak/white.
  3. Use of sound? Diagetic sound makes the audience feel like theyre really there, so it makes you want to see the film to escape from the real world. It can be used to exaggerate bangs.
  4. Voice over? A voice over provides the audience with a more personalized experience, helping them relate to the trailer on a deeper level. This can be a serious advantage over the competition making your trailer more memorable.
  5. Dialogue? It gives the audience a better idea of what the film is about, it makes you feel closer towards the character and humor.
  6. Music? Music adds to the atmosphere and rounds off the emotions; it can add to the personality of a character and fill in non-dialogue clips of the trailer.
  7. Titling? Titling makes the audience focus more because its the only thing they can watch, however during voice overs ontop of a clip, we often block out the speech and focus more on the images. It is easier to digest the words.
  8. Genre? The stereotypes of the genre are often shown to promote the genre.
Marketing: how films are marketed to specific audiences, TV adverts, posters, trailers, use of social media, magazines etc. Find relevant examples and comment on them in detail.
Last House On The Left could be marketed easily on social networking sites such as Facebook as majority of Facebookers are 18+ which is the certifcate of this film, it could be a hover kind of advert where you can hover over it and the trailer plays instantly grabbing someones attention. It can be promoted on TV after 9pm to target the 18+ audience; this could also be played straight after another 18+ film on a break. It can be put on posters outside cinemas or tattoo parlours or simply a bus stop.

Submarine - Before Viewing

Submarine;
Directed by - Richard Ayoade
Certificate - 15
Running Time - 1 hour and 37minutes
Why we're analysing this film - its from a teenagers prospective.

What sort of feeling and impact can music videos have and what effect could a music video style sequence achieve in a film?
Music videos can create all sorts of emotions depending on the lyrics of the song, these emotions can be shown through the people in the music video. It shows a certain characters feelings in responce to the song. This is the same with music in a film. It reflects emotions and sometimes a characters personality. For example loud, fast, up-beat and exciting lyriced music could be added to a person who loves to party, this type of music can be added to a party scene, a catwalk etc. Slow, peaceful, low harmony, with meaningful lyrics could be added to a scene of someone crying, walking down a quiet road thinking, someone running in slow motion etc..

Can you think of other films which feature extended montage sequences that are quite like music videos?
Princess Diaries 2 where the princess walks with a group of  children encouraging them to be more confindent and that they're all princess'. The song played is 'Kelly Clarkson- Breakway'. This song includes the lyrics: I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly, I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky, and I'll make a wish. Take a chance, make a change, and breakaway. This song was used because the lyrics match the scene of achieving something and being stronger as a group of children.

Richard Ayoade's Music Videos:
Arctic Monkeys- Fluorescent Adolescent - this relates to a high speed action adventure sequence. Clowns are used for the twist in the sequence, this could be taken for scary or funny; but as the clowns are destroying and hurting people; this is scary.
